I'm working out the kinks of this new deck and the initial design would cost me about 25. Not too bad there but if I add more powerful and rarer cards I could come close to doubling the cost. More expensive does not mean better but I do want some fun cards like vesuvan doppelganger and Maze of Ith. Far from required but it would vastly improve things. I could always purchase the deck in stages or even just sub cards out when I get the chance. Since I have no idea how well it will work or if it will be fun its hard to commit to such a steep price. So I'm just curious as to what you think is too much to spend on a deck. If building from scratch I would like to spend no more than 50 to 60 and ideally do so slowly. Ignoring the lands most cards should be cheap in case a few I need are a little expensive and I need more than 1 copy.

Well this is a bad question to ask me. ;D
I look at most decks as investments and as things that will give me enjoyment for years and years. I'm not going to even think about what the cost my angel deck was, but it started out relatively low and kept growing and growing as I added cards to it one by one and spent too much time on mtgsalvation lol.
So I honestly don't think there is a "too much" amount as long as you enjoy the deck. Of course if you're going to spend a lot on a card I'd say make sure it will help the deck win and you'll enjoy using it; having an expensive card that doesn't help you win at least sometimes, just gets annoying and frustrating after a while. Of course some enjoyable cards are fun, like my guided passage. It doesn't really help me win, but it sure is funny to have my opponents pick out 3 cards for me to use.
I say go ahead and add the fun and rarer cards if you can afford to double the cost of the deck because I think it will pay off in the end. If you can't afford to right now you can at least always add the cards one by one as time goes on. If I happen to have any you need I'm more than happy to get them to you, but I'm not sure that I have anything for it.

My angel deck over the years has costed me a small fortune and what I have spent on cards in general could have made a small nation wealthy. I tried my deck on magic workstation and now the problem is it feels like I'm trying to too much at once. Instead of the dopplegangers I could use wall of vapors that I had thought of adding. Then instead of mystic gate I could stick with coastal tower and go with the blue/white signant.

It's hard to say. My approach to deck building is different from Ken's, in that I like to build the core of the deck out of stuff I already have and then supplement that with purchases. There are exceptions of course, but rarely if ever have I made an entire deck by buying it all at once.
Ultimately it comes down to how much you have and how often you're going to play the deck. I don't like to make big purchases much these days, although I might feel different with more income. I doubt I would ever drop the kind of money it takes to buy Moxes or a Black Lotus, but I might be willing to at least go for some of the dual lands if I had more cash to burn.
