Well trading away a Force of Will isn't as bad as people trading away a Black Lotus for a Force of Nature's back in the day. I didn't do that but I read about a few people that have. But I guess back in the time of Alpha and Beta its more understandable to make that trade.

That's true I suppose. I don't remember the exact details of the trade I made, but it was a bunch of cards for a bunch of cards. I know I got two Thawing Glaciers out of the deal, which at the time I thought was a great card because InQuest magazine praised the hell out of it. I didn't realize at the time that they were completely full of crap as far as their ideas about what was good and bad in Magic. I mean seriously, they claimed Shard Phoenix was the best card in Stronghold, and Dream Halls was the worst. Guess which one was so good it got restricted? Yep. But then again I was also a pretty terrible Magic player. We used to play with variant rules back then - you can play as many lands as you want in a turn, and you always drew back up to seven during your draw phase. So since I thought along those lines, I tended to think things like "What makes Ancestral Recall special? I draw more cards than that all the time!" and nonsense like that. So the idea of paying 5 mana for a counter was horrible. You sure as hell would never pay its alternate cost. I mean, lose a life? Hell no! Man I was such a noob back then. On the other hand, you can see why I was so in love with Rathi Dragon since having enough lands to toss to that wasn't hard at all.

Yeah its totally understandable. A lot of the "good" cards are cards that a new player would look at and instinctively think its bad but is actually good. The fetch lands for example seem like a bad idea to most people at first glance.

So do cards like Necropotence, Yawgmoth's Bargain, or even Phyrexian Arena. I used to think trading life for something like card draw was a horrible idea. For that matter I thought Vampiric Tutor was hugely inferior to Demonic Tutor or even Diabolic Tutor for the same reason. And then someone pointed out to me (I think it was on a forum somewhere) that life is a resource in Magic, the same as mana, cards in hand, or anything else. The only life point that you can't afford to lose is the last one.

Yeah had Demonic Tutor not be restricted in Vintage and banned in Legacy i would use only it, except Vampiric Tutor does have the advantage of being an instant.
