Worst 5 sets?

I figured that since we have a Top 5 sets thread, we need to have the counterpart also. So without further ado:

1) Planeshift
2) Apocalypse
3) Prophecy
4) Legions
5) The Dark

The only good cards in Planeshift in my opinion are Flametongue Kavu, Meddling Mage, and Warped Devotion. Really Meddling Mage isn't all that great, I just think it's funny.

Apocalypse is easily the most overrated set ever printed. The only stuff from this set I even sort of like are Symbiotic Deployment and Phyrexian Arena. And Arena was reprinted in 8th edition, so this set only has one card going for it. In addition, this set gave us Goblin Ringleader, which is largely responsible for the hideously annoying Food Chain Goblins deck. Plus I absolutely loathe cross-color kickers. If a card is white, it SHOULD NOT have a red kicker.

Prophecy, while it also sucks, has Avatar of Woe, which automatically makes it better than Planeshift and Apocalypse to me. The only other decent cards in Prophecy are Rhystic Study and Jolrael, Empress of Beasts, which is only so-so.

Legions has nothing other than a few goblins and Akroma, Angel of Wrath.

The Dark, while it has cool flavor to me and a lot of cool art, was a very weak set with a lot of godawful cards. Pure nostalgia keeps it down to number 5 though.

I was going to put Nemesis at #5, but I looked at the spoiler as I was making this post and decided it isn't so bad after all, thanks to Blinding Angel, Rootwater Thief, Kill Switch, and Rhox. And there's Lin-Sivvi, although to some that's a strike against the set.

this one is kind of tough for me because i use stuff from most of the sets. every set has at least one good card. I don't agree with your planeshift thing. but i may be biased because of Lord of the Undead.

I think someone is a little monothematic: Judging on power, power, and power. Which makes it a little on that Homelands didn't make the list. My only set I really hate--although I hate this one passionately--is Darksteel.

If I was judging on power, would I have listed a card like Warped Devotion as the saving grace of Planeshift?

I don't like the Invasion block as a whole, because I felt they tried too hard to shove the multicolored idea down people's throats. The reason Invasion itself was not considered for this list is the 5 Dragon legends. My inner Timmy loves them too much to hate that set. On the other hand, I really didn't find much of anything in Apocalypse that was interesting. Spiritmonger has got to be the most overrated creature ever printed. I like Phyrexian Arena because it is a good card, and I love Symbiotic Deployment because it's so fun to combo with. I use it in a deck with Verdant Force and a lot of small creatures and mana elves.

As for Legions, the set was bland as all hell and I wasn't predisposed to like it even before I read over the spoiler and discovered that every non-Goblin card other than Akroma was utter crap. (Well, except for some of the Slivers ;D)

The Dark is on there because, even though I'm a big fan of older sets, some of the worst junk ever printed comes from this set. For instance, Sorrow's Path, which hardly anyone will argue is among the ten worst cards ever made.

Notice that I did not include Homelands, which I felt had a lot of fun and interesting cards including a lot of cool legends. I also didn't include Fallen Empires, which is the set I actually started Magic with and still has some of the best art.

I thought about including Alliances on this list. Even though there are good cards in the set (like Force of Will, which is the best counter ever made), I never got any of those cards. I always drew utter crap from Alliances packs, which is why I don't like that set. Still, that's not a reflection of the set as a whole, just my bad luck with it (incidentally, I had this problem with Exodus and Darksteel as well, although at least with Darksteel I got good cards in draft).

i've had luck like that with Mirrodin.....thats why it took 2 boxes and then me resorting to buying the expensive singles to finish the set.

So both of you have expressed disapproval with my list, but between you, you have only listed one set that you dislike, and without any explanation why. How about some top 5 lists here?

I have not expressed dislike for any set. I only mentioned that i had trouble getting the good stuff out of Mirrodin. i don't really dislike any sets.

Alright. An explanation then:

I don't hate any in Magic except Darksteel. Honestly. I hate Darksteel because it had a bunch of overpowered cards that were no fun flavor wise, were boring ability wise, and the set's story was RETARTED! Plus, I just hate it.
