if a creature has protection from say black is that creature protected from damage or spells and abilitiesor both? because in my cleric deck some of my creatures have protection from different colors and i dont know if there exempt from damage or spells or even both.

It has general protection from that source of color regardless of what is done. IE: damage, or abilities or whatever else the creature may have will do nothing.

Protection can be summed up with the acronym DEBT
A creature with Protection cannot be:
Damaged Enchanted Blocked Targeted
by creatures, spells, or abilities of whatever color or type they have protection from.

I've never heard that before, but it sums up protection pretty well. You seem to know your stuff pretty well. Have you considered signing up here? It would be really appreciated, because we can always use new members.
