Banding works differently depending on whether the banding creature(s) attacks or blocks. Effectively, banding is forming a small gang of creatures. When attacking, you may band any number of creatures that have banding, along with one that does not. All creatures that you band attack together. If one of those creatures is blocked, they are all considered blocked, and all deal damage to the blocking creature or creatures rather than to the defending player. Even if you band a Benalish Hero with a flying creature such as Pearl Dragon, and your opponent blocks with a single nonflying creature, your flying creature is still considered blocked. All combat damage dealt to your band of creatures is divided up according to your choice, rather than by the opponent's choice as it would normally be. If your opponent blocks that same group listed above with a Leviathan, you may choose to have it deal all 10 damage to one creature if you choose, or split it up however you want to. When blocking, banding is a little bit simpler. No matter how many creatures you block the same creature with, as long as at least one has banding, you get to decide how the attacker's damage is divided up between your blocking creatures. As in the example above, you can have a huge 10/10 creature deal all of its damage to a single one of your creatures, and spare the rest of them. Without banding, this would normally be the opponent's choice. See how long of an explanation that was? That's why banding hasn't been used since Weatherlight. And I'm afraid that if you want an explanation of why you would want to use banding (at least when attacking), then I'm afraid I can't help you.
