What do you think are some of the best sets ever put out for MtG?
I think Tempest is one of the best. Here are just a few of the great cards from Tempest:
Aluren Overrun Whim of Volrath Shocker Seeker of Skybreak Recycle Death Pits of Rath Skyshoud Elves Furnace of Rath Disturbed Burial
And it's also the origin of buyback, one of the greatest card abilities ever.

What does everyone think some of the best sets are? I'm perticularly fond of tempest cause there are so many really good cards or at least cards that give the potential to form really good combos.
other than that, ice age was a really good set. there were just a lot of really good cards and one of the most powerful creatures as well.

Oh, and Tempest was also the first set for which they made pre-constructed decks.

What I liked best about Ice Age is that unlike most newer sets, there was BALANCE to those cards. If it did something powerful, it had a big drawback. Look at Minion of Leshrac, for example. Sure, you can tap it to destroy any creature or land, but you have to sacrifice a creature to it every turn, and it also has a pretty big casting cost.

I'd have to go with Tempest, then Apocalypse for various reasons, and then Torment. I loved the vlack concentrated set. I believe they are planning on releasing another one soon.

I really liked Torment and Judgement. I hope they release something other than these damned artifact sets. I am getting quite sick of them.

I forgot Homelands. That one is probably my favorite of them all. But I figured that was assumed.

how the hell could i forget apocalypse? i only have the entire set minus one card. it has a lot of cool cards that arent overly powerfull
note: by stating that there arent any overpowerful cards, im excluding legacy weapon. i know its a bullsh¡t card and thats why i dont use it anymore

I got to say Urza's Saga. That set was soooooooooooo good. Hell, the entire block was fantastic. But Saga had some of the best cards ever, Tolarian Academy, Rewind, Time Spiral, Stroke of Genius, Catastrophe, Duress, Gaea's Cradle, Mishra's Helix, Serra Avatar, Waylay(before the errata), and Yawgmoth's will just to name a few.

oh and in response to Volrath's post about d**ned artifact sets, the Mirrodin block was supposed to be mostly artifacts. WotC decided that after Scourge each block would be a totally different world, and Mirrodin was code named "metal world". The next block, Kamigawa, was coded named "Spirit World" so you should get the answer to your hopes. (there were rumors that "shadow" would come back in the Spirit World block)

One more thing in favor of Tempest: Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the first set not to have cumulative upkeep since Ice Age (Alliances, Mirage, Visions, and Weatherlight all did, not sure about 5th Edition)?
