pay 3 black, tap alter of darkness: destroy target nonblack creature, it can't be regenerated, you put a 2/2 black ghost creature token with fear into play.

Other than my dislike of all indestructible cards, the card seems pretty cool. I could see this fitting in with one of the newer artifact sets (Mirrodin, Darksteel, or whatever the next one is called).

Its ability is waaaaaay undercosted unless you mean the owner of the destroyed creature puts the token into play under their control.

Well it's commonly 3 mana to whack a nonblack creature, so maybe 5 or 6 to kill it and gain a creature?

But if it has black in the cost, that would make it a black card. Artifacts by definition never have colored mana in the casting cost, only (possibly) in the activation cost.
