Direct damage is the enforcer of sanity in Magic. It ends the game when a bunch of dorks clog up the board with 28 variations of Fog Bank, Puppeteer, Silent Arbiter, and Ensnaring Bridge.

Maybe just have it deal damage to creatures. Also MTG is currently very against anachronisms so they woudnt want guns in their world.
	The only things in Magic faster than tapping mana are flipping a coin and taking off your pants.
