Tonight I drafted for the first time at Astro City. 1 pack each of Mirrodin, Darksteel, and Fifth Dawn for a grand total of something like $13 (except that I had a free pass for reasons I won't discuss here). It was a lot of fun, and although I made it only to the third round, it's definitely something I would do again. So anyway, this is the deck I drafted with:
Creatures: 13
1 Sylvok Explorer
1 Tangle Asp
1 Tel-Jilad Chosen
1 Tel-Jilad Outrider
1 Tornado Elemental
1 Viridian Acolyte
1 Arcbound Hybrid
1 Arcbound Ravager
3 Arcbound Stinger
1 Myr Quadropod
1 Tangle Golem
Artifacts: 3
1 Icy Manipulator
1 Leonin Bladetrap
1 Talisman of Unity
Instants/Sorceries: 7
1 Deconstruct
1 Echoing Courage
2 Journey of Discovery
1 Nourish
1 Oxidize
1 Rude Awakening
Lands: 17
1 Stalking Stones
16 Forest
Originally, I had an Isochron Scepter and another forest in place of the Journey of Discovery, but I quickly sideboarded them out once I realized that I had two instants in the entire deck that could be put on an Isochron, and that I was getting mana flooded. At one point I also had a Trolls of Tel-Jilad in, but I took it out eventually because I could never get it cast.
Most of my wins (especially the more memorable ones) came from casting and entwined Journey of Discovery (once I even cast two on successive turns!) to get a bunch of lands in, then next turn playing Rude Awakening to attack with 9 forests that were all 2/2 creatures. The deck, I am proud to say, gained a small degree of infamy because of that combo.
I also learned a few general strategies for draft play that I will post in the draft strategies thread.
