Is anyone free Saturday for Magic since Sunday is possibly D&D.

Ok cool. I have to see if one day works better than the other, but I'll let you know.

I'll be in Champaign with family. In the unlikely event that I get back early enough on Sunday, I'll join you if that's when you're playing. But don't expect me - the main family gathering is on Sunday so I expect I won't be back here til 9 or 10 in the evening.

So how did it go?

It was fun once we got together. We played about five games and I believe I won three to Alex's two, but one game I won I was at one life so it was really close. I determined that the only deck I have that is fast enough to beat the Shrine deck is the Vampire deck. The Tooth and Nail deck came close, but not fast enough. There is sort of a funny story involving elder dragon legends that resulted in me gambiting a card at Alex.

Since it looks like D&D isn't going to happen should we try Magic on Sunday?

I was originally going to say I'm up for it, but truthfully I'm not enjoying Magic as much lately. I think maybe I'll take a pass this time.

Sorry if I'm partly to blame for that.

To be brutally honest? You are partly to blame for that, though it's only one reason among several. The combination of new cards (which raise the power level of the game despite what people on the WotC boards claim) plus stuff like Power 9, which costs way more than I would be willing to spend on Magic even if I could afford to, makes it so I basically can't keep up unless I fall back on the two or three most crazy-powerful decks I have, many of which aren't all that fun to play regulary (that's why you don't see my Myr deck or my Ironworks deck unless I'm on a losing streak and getting frustrated). It doesn't bother me that my weaker decks never win. My Legend deck is half joke, half opportunity to use some cards I think are cool but never could fit into another deck. I never play that one expecting a win. My Snake deck was thrown together pretty much because I was bored and I had enough snakes to fill up a deck. It's like my Druid deck, it exists but I don't care about it. My Ninja deck has always been slow, and so it rarely wins. But my better decks, my second-tier stuff if you will, that's a lot of fun to play like my Burn deck, Reanimator deck, Card Drawing deck, Sliver deck, and so on, struggles to compete with sets from the last two or three years. Throw Moxes, Black Lotus, and Time Walk in there, and I'm starting to feel like I might as well not be playing if I'm not using one of my three absolute fastest decks. I mean, I have no room to talk about using broken cards. I use Tolarian AcademyTolarian Academy, I use Memory Jar, and I use Balance. Hell, I'm using multiple Balances in one deck, even though it's restricted. I tried to switch to Wrath of God, but I had to skip out on buying those when I went to Pastimes because combined with the other stuff I wanted more, they were too expensive. I'm not meaning to cramp your style or tell you how to play or anything, and it's not like I'm pissed off or anything, but I'm also not going to lie. The game is getting too high-stakes for me and if I'm going to lose 5 or 6 times in a row because I'm not able to buy the really expensive old stuff or willing to buy the new stuff, then to be honest I'd rather do something else. I mean, I'll still hang out, but I don't really feel like playing Magic.
