So I got Skward Sword for the Wii a couple of weeks after it came out due to money problems. Took a couple of days to start playing it though. Its a long game though I'm something like 40 hours into it and roughly half way done. So this is my half assed attempt to give it a review for anyone who cares.
First off I gotta say I love the game. This and Punch-Out are the two reasons to own a Wii. Although I do love it it is not a flawless game so I'll start with the good. I think its the best new Zelda since the 64 one. The graphics are delightful and the gameplay is loads of fun. Its not merely a hack and slash adventure. Just getting to the dungeons is almost like an outdoor dungeon in its own. So arguably that could be seen as bad its not as free roaming as the older titles. However the way its handled is fun and the combat is a blast.
With the motion plus controls Link's sword moves roughly the way you move your arms so the farther you draw your arm back Link does too. His angle changes with yours and you use the nunchuck piece to raise the shield. You can also shield bash enemies to knock them on their backs and then preform a leap attack to thrust your sword through them for an instant kill. Enemies are kind of intelligent they do block and counterattack. The items in game are fun as well. Like the beetle you get I have come to love. Its a mechanicle beetle you launch to at first retrieve items. Later it gets a pincer upgrade used to carry items so you can do fun things like make bomb runs on enemies and objects.
The menus are rather easy to access although your limited on what you can carry. This too upgrades like everything but anything non essential you have to pick carefully from. All your items like the bow, bombs and other items have a seperate menu. The various medals you can carry for added effects, bottles and extra ammo pouches take up adventure pouch slots. I think you get a max of 8 of them.
The graphics are quite nice although like the 64 game there are some god awful looking NPCs but not nearly as many and the graphics are a lot smoother. The music is quite good and most is orchestrated.
You get a helper in this game too like Navi but cooler. First off she dosen't yell out hey listen all the time. She does have an obnoxious habit of stating the obvious though. But what she is and how she looks is cool. Shes basically the essence or spirt of your sword. Speaking of the sword they brought back the ability to send projectile energy from it.
---------------------------
Ok now for the bad. The controls tend to migrate for me after a bit so I find myself recentering them frequently. This is annoying and caun wreak havok with the beetles flying. Otherwise not too big a problem.
What bugs me abolve all else is they kept the wallet system started in Ocerana of Time as well as highlighting important text. I hate themoney limit but I really hate the fact they seem to think I'm stupid when they need to highlight place and people names like I won't realize they are important. They have had puzzles that have driven me to the brink of madness with little or no clues but they can tell me to go seek Zelda in red like its something I'll fail to miss without their help.
The story starts out strong and I think it gets a little silly in the end. It tries to link all the games together (no pun intended) Seriously this shows the creation of the master sword as well as you apparently use the harp Zelda has in Ocerana of Time. The general story is pretty cool after the goddesses created the Triforce a fourth goddess stayed behind to guard it. A demonic horde basically starts a world war in an attempt to get the Triforce and the goddess with the alliance of 5 races stops the horde. She also rips a chunk of land to place survivors on which is Skyloft where Link is from. So the villian in this game is some kind of demon instead of Gannon. I won't spoil any more in case anyone actually cares to play it.
The world overall seems small there's 3 zones and Skyloft. They phase and you revisit them and there is a lot to do it just feels more confined than the other games. So its a hard thing to say if its good or bad.
The upgrade system while innovative is a pain. You need to collect things like monster drops and other items laying around the envornment and bugs you catch. Its time consuming which is why its irritating. A few of the items are really hard to get and the goddess plume is all but impossible to get until the end when you can just buy them. The other problem I have is shields can break. Whatever idiot thought that was a good idea deserves to be whipped. I had the best sheild avalable and it busted during a very hard mid boss fight. The base shield before upgrades is 500 and I need for what right now is an irreplacable goddes plume to get the best upgrade. I found the one I had in a treasure chest.
So overall I give it a 9 out of 10. The 3D envornment is excellent, the puzzles are delightful and its been an overall enjoyable experience. I look forward to doing the hero mode after I beat it. So its essentially got a master quest in it too.
