I have seen a great many people, especially on the WotC board, state that the Urza bloc contained many broken cards. A couple prime examples are Tolarian Academy, Mind over Matter, and Stroke of Genius. These three cards combined into a deck that could often win in 1-3 turns. I was just wondering whether any of you thought these sets had a lot of broken cards.

I've seen it spelled bloc before. Not entirely sure which way it's supposed to be.

Bloc is a word... But it means something else. Yes, the block in general was overpowered. But still awesome. Why? You have to ask? It's so... Obvious: Bubbling Beebles.

The Urza block has nothing on the Mirrodin block.

As a whole, i think you are right. Specific cards are more powerful though.

If you take into account all the things that were banned in both Urza and Mirrodin blocks (all the various parts of Academy, Mind Over Matter, Stroke of Genius, etc. as well as Skullclamp), then I think your average Mirrodin block deck, say, Tooth & Nail or Raffinity, would beat whatever other decks came out of Urza block probably 80% of the time. If you allowed all the Combo Winter goodness, then Academy vs. Raffinity would come down to the starting hand of the Academy deck.
