The overall power level does seem to have gone up. Last time we played only game I won was with a mostly preconstructed reanimator deck. The time before that ifailed to win at all. Of course it could also be due to the more relaxed playing and in a big game there's a lot more crap that can happen. Still with that said I thought the power level was steadily rising since the Mirrodin block. Granted the Kamigawa stuff seemd to be less powerful from what I have heard. I know very little from then till now but from what I've seen even pre Innistrad like New Phyrexeria is powerful as well as the other Mirrodin stuff.

It seems like they go in a cycle, where they keep pushing the envelope and making things more powerful until they have a block that's way too powerful and a lot of stuff ends up getting banned. First was the Urza block, then they dropped the power level with Mercadian Masques and started slowly increasing it again. By the time of Onslaught it was getting pretty strong again, and then you had Mirrodin which was just silly with the affinity and Arcbound stuff and so on.
They apparently figured out that they'd gone too far so Kamigawa was a much less powerful group of sets. And then from what I saw Ravnica was a little bit up from there and now it's gotten back to ridiculously powerful again. The question is whether they're going to scale it back again or not.
