So what existing creature types should we include? Post as many or as few as you want, as well as ones you think we should steer clear of. We'll probably want to create a new type or two as well.
Here are some basic ones I figure we'll probably want to work in:
White: Angels, Soldiers, Clerics, maybe Birds? Blue: Wizards, Birds, Merfolk? Black: Demons, Zombies, Imps, Bats?, Vampires? Red: Goblins, Barbarians? Green: Beasts, Elves, Druids
I'm sure there will be more.
Ones I think we should stay away from, and why:
Anything block or world specific, such as Cephalids, Myr, etc. because they are specific to those certain worlds and flavor-wise it just wouldn't make sense.
Slivers because they're controversial - everyone either loves them or hates them. And several of the people who expressed interest in working on this project are among the haters. Besides, I don't think we can come up with enough practical ones to make it work.

I was thinking about the project and how we talked about before making i a set that breaks some of the rules as to what each color is supposed to do ( Witch Hunter, Mind Bomb). Along those lines we could use some of the less supported races. I favor trolls over elves for green, merfolk over wizards for blue, imps or minions over zombies for black, orcs over goblins for red (also we should reprint Kobolds of Kher Kep). Finally white, which has an abundance of common creature types (soldiers, spirits, clerics have all been done a lot lately) so I suggest breaking the "no angels smaller than 4/4 rule and making thata theme, or make a bunch of white rogues (i think this fits well with the white weenie theme).

white rogues haven't been done since back in Lin Sivvi's days (what happened to the card things on the side of the response page?). I think it would be a great idea. Black could also throw in Nightmares and Horrors, although we'd need a new explanation for how nightmares are coming about (since dementia summoners were a cabal thing)

ugh, 3 posts in a row, sorry. I have another idea. We could take an old creature that was popular and turn it into a creature type (i.e. Lhurgoyf is the type for Mortivore along with 3-4 others)

Yay! Time for some new Will-o-the-Wisps and Uncle Istvans!
Seriously though, I think using some less common creature types is a good idea. I was going to push heavily for merfolk, as I never bought the argument that they were out of flavor (it's freakin FISH MEN! How is that not blue?!) On a related note, we could screw the color wheel a bit more by pushing a couple standard creature types out of their traditional color.... such as a goblin that isn't red or an elf that isn't green.
And I wholeheartedly support a weenie angel!

red:bring on the giants!!! blue:merfolk bad. avens good, unless its a world thing white: angels/ soldiers rule! green: fear the wurms because they will crush you black: nightmares and horrors, we could say that a evil wizard brought them into the world by opening a dementinal gate, because everybody knows that when something goes wrong a wizard did it.

Thanks to the Mistform Ultimus Watch, I have a comprehensive list of every creature type in Magic to date. Here they are. We can use this to decide how many existing types we want to use in our set(s): Abomination Aboroth Advisor Aladdin Albatross Alchemist Ali-Baba Ali-from-Cairo Alligator Ambush-Party Ancestor Angel Ant Antelope Ape Archaeologist Archer Artificer Asp Assassin Assembly-Worker Atog Aurochs Avatar Avenger Avizoa Badger Ball-Lightning Bandit Banshee Barbarian Barishi Basilisk Bat Bear Beast Bee Beeble Behemoth Being Berserker Bird Blinkmoth Boar Bodyguard Bringer Brood Brother Brownie Brushwagg Bull Bureaucrat Butterfly Camarid Camel Caravan Caribou Carnivore Carriage Carrier Cat Cavalry Cave-People Centaur Cephalid Cheetah Chicken Chimera Citizen Clamfolk Cleric Clone Cobra Cockatrice Constable Cow Crab Crocodile Crusader Dandan Demon Dervish Deserter Devil Devouring-Deep Dinosaur Djinn Dog Doppelganger Dragon Dragonfly Drake Drill-Sergeant Drone Druid Dryad Dwarf Eater Eel Effigy Efreet Egg Elder Elemental Elephant Elf El-Hajjaj Enchantress Entity Erne Essence Exorcist Faerie Fallen Farmer Ferret Fiend Fish Flagbearer Flying-Men Force Fox Frog Frostbeast Fungus Fungusaur Gaea's-Avenger Gaea's-Liege Gargoyle Gatekeeper General Ghost Ghoul Giant Gnome Goat Goblin Golem Gorgon Graveborn Gremlin Griffin Guardian Gus Gypsy Hag Harlequin Hell's-Caretaker Heretic Hero Hipparion Hippo Homarid Hornet Horror Horse Horseman Hound Human Hunter Hydra Hyena Illusion Imp Incarnation Infernal-Denizen Inquisitor Insect Island-Fish Jackal Jellyfish Kavu Keeper Kelp King Kithkin Knight Kobold Kraken Lady-of-Proper-Etiquette Leech Legend (until Champions of Kamigawa is legal in tournaments) Legionnaire Lemure Leper Leviathan Lhurgoyf Lichenthrope Licid Lion Lizard Lord Lurker Lycanthrope Mage Maggot Maiden Mammoth Manticore Mantis Marid Martyr Master Medusa Meerkat Mercenary Merchant Merfolk Mindsucker Minion Minor Minotaur Miracle-Worker Mist Mistfolk Mob Mold-Demon Monger Mongoose Monkey Monster Mosquito Mummy Murk-Dwellers Mutant Myr Mystic Nameless-Race Narwhal Necrosavant Nekrataal Niall-Silvain Nightmare Nightstalker Noble Nomad Octopus Ogre Ooze Orb Orc Orgg Ouphe Ox Oyster Paladin Peacekeeper Pegasus Pentavite People-of-the-Woods Pest Phantasm Phelddagrif Phoenix Pig Pikemen Pincher Pirate Pixie-Queen Plant Poison-Snake Poltergeist Pony Preacher Priest Prism Pyknite Rabbit Raider Ranger Rat Rebel Reflection Rhino Robber Roc Rock-Sled Rogue Rukh Sage Salamander Sand Saproling Satyr Scavenger Scorpion Scout Serf Serpent Shade Shaman Shapeshifter Shark Sheep Ship Shyft Sindbad Singing-Tree Sister Skeleton Slith Sliver Slug Smith Snake Soldier Sorceress Spawn Speaker Specter Spellshaper Sphinx Spider Spike Spirit Sponge Sprite Spuzzem Spy Squire Squirrel Stangg-Twin Starfish Stone Strider Survivor Swarm Tactician Tarpan Taskmaster Tetravite Thief The-Biggest-Baddest-Nastiest-Scariest-Creature-You'll-Ever-See Thopter Thrull Thundermare Tiger Titan Toad Tombspawn Tortoise Townsfolk Tracker Treefolk Troll Turtle Twin Uncle-Istvan Undead Unicorn Vampire Vedalken Viashino Villain Viper Volver Vulture Walking-Dead Wall War-Rider Warrior Warthog Wasp Wave Whale Whippoorwill Wight Wiitigo Wildebeest Will-o'-the-Wisp Wirefly Witch Wizard Wolf Wolverine Wolverine-Pack Wolves-of-the-Hunt Wombat Wood Worm Wraith Wretched Wurm Yeti Zombie

Removing types that are either associated with a single card (such as Uncle Istvan), as well as Unglued-only types (such as BFM's type), block-specific types (like Myr and Cephalid) and token-only types (Serf, Pentavite, and the like) except for Saproling, the list looks something like this below. I also removed types that are basically collapsible into other types (for example, Preacher and Priest are basically Clerics, Rhino or Camel can be classified as Beasts without much of a stretch, and such) although I left a couple of the interesting ones like Lemure and Satyr in there on purpose: Abomination Alligator Ancestor Angel Ape Archaeologist Archer Artificer Asp Assassin Atog Avatar Avenger Badger Bandit Banshee Barbarian Basilisk Bat Bear Beast Bee Beeble Behemoth Berserker Bird Boar Bodyguard Brood Brownie Bull Butterfly Caravan Carnivore Cat Centaur Cheetah Chimera Cleric Cobra Constable Crab Crocodile Crusader Demon Devil Dinosaur Djinn Dog Doppelganger Dragon Dragonfly Drake Druid Dryad Dwarf Eel Efreet Egg Elder Elemental Elephant Elf Enchantress Faerie Fiend Fish Force Fox Frog Fungus Gargoyle Ghost Ghoul Giant Gnome Goat Goblin Golem Gorgon Griffin Guardian Gypsy Hag Harlequin Heretic Hero Hippo Hornet Horror Horse Horseman Hound Human Hunter Hydra Hyena Illusion Imp Incarnation Insect Jackal Jellyfish Keeper King Knight Kobold Kraken Leech Legionnaire Lemure Leviathan Lhurgoyf Licid Lion Lizard Lord Lycanthrope Maggot Mammoth Manticore Mantis Martyr Master Mercenary Merchant Merfolk Minion Minotaur Mist Mob Mongoose Monkey Mosquito Mummy Mutant Mystic Nightmare Nightstalker Nomad Octopus Ogre Ooze Orc Orgg Ouphe Oyster Paladin Pegasus Phantasm Phelddagrif Phoenix Pirate Plant Poltergeist Pony Raider Ranger Rat Rebel Robber Roc Rogue Rukh Sage Salamander Saproling Satyr Scavenger Scorpion Scout Serpent Shade Shaman Shapeshifter Shark Ship Skeleton Sliver Slug Snake Soldier Sorceress Specter Spellshaper Sphinx Spider Spike Spirit Sponge Sprite Spy Squirrel Starfish Swarm Thief Thopter Thrull Tiger Titan Toad Tortoise Townsfolk Tracker Treefolk Troll Turtle Undead Unicorn Vampire Viashino Viper Vulture Wall Warrior Wasp Whale Wight Wildebeest Witch Wizard Wolf Wolverine Worm Wraith Wurm Yeti Zombie

Trimmed the list down some by removing some very unlikely candidates (like Ouphes and such) and combining a few others (like Viper with Snake).
Abomination Alligator Angel Ape Archer Assassin Atog Avatar Avenger Banshee Barbarian Basilisk Bat Bear Beast Behemoth Bird Boar Bodyguard Bull Cat Centaur Cheetah Chimera Cleric Crab Crocodile Demon Devil Dinosaur Djinn Dog Doppelganger Dragon Dragonfly Drake Druid Dryad Dwarf Eel Efreet Egg Elder Elemental Elephant Elf Enchantress Faerie Fiend Fish Fox Frog Fungus Gargoyle Ghost Ghoul Giant Gnome Goat Goblin Golem Gorgon Griffin Guardian Gypsy Hag Horror Horse Hound Human Hunter Hydra Hyena Illusion Imp Incarnation Insect Jackal Jellyfish Keeper Knight Kobold Kraken Leech Legionnaire Lemure Leviathan Lhurgoyf Licid Lion Lizard Lord Lycanthrope Maggot Manticore Mantis Master Merchant Merfolk Minion Minotaur Mist Mob Monkey Mosquito Mummy Mutant Nightmare Nightstalker Nomad Octopus Ogre Ooze Orc Paladin Pegasus Phantasm Phoenix Pirate Plant Raider Ranger Rat Rebel Roc Rogue Rukh Sage Salamander Saproling Satyr Scavenger Scorpion Scout Shade Shaman Shapeshifter Shark Ship Skeleton Slug Snake Soldier Sorceress Specter Spellshaper Sphinx Spider Spirit Sprite Squirrel Swarm Thief Tiger Titan Toad Tracker Treefolk Troll Turtle Undead Unicorn Vampire Wall Warrior Wight Witch Wizard Wolf Wolverine Wraith Wurm Zombie

If I ever get motivated enough, I plan to research about how many creature types Wizards includes in the average set so we can use that as a point of reference. Um... I guess Avens are sorta a block thing, but we could use birds without a problem. They seem to like mixing animals and people. The Aven were birdmen, then in Mirrodin you have the Loxodon (elephant people) and Leonin (cat people). Now in Kamigawa there are the Kitsune (fox people), the Orochi (snake people), and Nezumi (rat people). We could invent something along those lines if we want to...

the kitsune wheren't made by wizards, they are a part of japaness folk lore and stuff, and i think the same goes for the other two but i dont know for sure.
